Ants

The ants' nest, without ants, mentioned at reference 1.

Since posting, I have noticed quite a lot of ant sign in the grass hereabouts, but mostly quite small because of the regular disturbance by mowing.

Perhaps, given the important role of ants in terrestrial ecology, I ought to discuss what can be done with the ecovoles.

In which connection, I seem to recall reading an estimate of the total above ground volume of all the termites' nests around the world, an estimate which seemed a very large number at the time. Sadly while google offers lots of nice pictures, he does not offer estimates of volume. And I do recall seeing some very large wood ants' nests in Stoke Woods, near Exeter. Very neat cones maybe three feet in diameter and two feet in height above ground. Not to mention the fossil ants' nests (as it were) of Bushy Park.
