More planning

Following the affair noticed at reference 1, another planning affair this morning. This time concerning one of the rather ugly office blocks built in the sixties, seventies and eighties at the Epsom end of East Street, illustrated left.

After half a century of service, the owners of the site would now like to demolish this block and replace it, this time with a mixed use block with student accommodation in the upper levels, presumably more creationists from reference 2. Perhaps they think that creation is not going to be taken over by robots any time soon and that it is a safe career choice. Not so sure myself, as I would have thought that the number of people needed to create camera ready or web ready copy has already been hugely reduced by the use of productivity aids on computers. And that demand has been hugely reduced by the same copy being used all over the world.

That apart, it is not much of a testimonial to the work of the developers, architects and builders of the last century that it makes more sense to demolish than to repurpose. That said, I cannot see any reason for the council to refuse planning permission.
