DIY not what it used to be these days, with my feeling very pleased with myself yesterday with what would have been trivia, in the margins in years gone by.
Item 1, it suddenly came to me that the clutter in our under-stairs cupboard would be significantly reduced by adding a few cup-hooks to hang things off. This being easy enough, first, because I had preserved a jam jar half full of cup-hooks in the garage in case they came in handy one day and, second, because one had the wooden underside of the stairs into which to screw them. No messing around with masonry bits and fixings. Four cup-hooks now installed and three hangings illustrated left. The blue hanging on the far left contains what is left of our supply of bird seed and it only remains to be seen whether I will remember where it is when November comes round, the season for hanging bird feeders out on the back patio. Last time it took some time, some days even.
The gauge next to it is a cunning device to equalise the pressure between the gravity feed hot water supply and the pressure feed cold water supply, with the result that the shower on the other side of the wall does both hot and cold at the turn of the handle. A cunning device dreamed up by Mr. Mills the builder, rather than the plumber.
Item 2, there had been complaints about a couple of shoots poking out of the top of the hawthorn tree in the front garden, threatening to interfere with our overhead broadband supply. The hawthorn which I notice when it flowers well, perhaps every other year. See, for example, reference 2, with the broadband supply is concerned just about visible top right. On this front, it suddenly came to me that these shoots would make a fine opportunity to deploy the long pole tree pruner noticed at reference 1.
And, in the event, I found that by opening the pruner up to its full ten foot extent and standing on a pair of steps, that I could reach and cut off the two shoots in question. Quite a tricky tool to handle at full stretch, but in this context, inside the crown of a small tree, at least possible. We will see how long it takes BH to notice, in the course of her morning surveys of the world outside from our bedroom window.
PS: I was reminded later of the elaborate shelving installed in his cupboard under the stairs by the naval uncle in Alverstoke. Elaboration born of the storage exigencies of both shipboard and caravan life. From where, for some reason or another, I associate to the splendid hotel at reference 3, which we stayed in a couple of times. Once used by Edward VII and his Jersey lily, to be near, but not at, the rather stuffy Osborne, over the water.

Tempest one
Last Saturday to the Tempest at the Barbican, with one of our national treasures in the lead, Simon Russell Beale, first seen by me in the flesh at the event noticed at reference 1, more recently as the long suffering husband in a film of 'Deep Blue Sea' (good) and as Falstaff in a film of Henry IV (adequate). In between, no fewer than two outings to see his Lear (good). See references 2 and 3.
Bad start in that the cyclists had taken over London again and Waterloo flavoured public transport did not seem to be functioning at all. Plus long queues at Epsom Station, with lots of customers, one out of two windows and one out of four machines working. Southern rules again.
Elected to travel by changing at Balham, where there was a working window which made no fuss about selling us tickets in arrears, with the only small catch being that the clerk could not sell an Epsom flavoured travelcard from Balham, resulting, in effect, in a small surcharge. Route worked well, rather better than the Elephant & Castle version suggested by the journey planner, which we now suspect of maximising the rail element of a journey at the expense of the tube element.
Picnic outside a closed pub near Moorgate, a pub which came with a lot of expensive looking garden furniture, solid endangered species from the tropics, furniture which did not appear to be chained down when not in use, in the way of suburban pubs. Perhaps they thought that theft would be too much of a performance from this particular location to be worth while. Perhaps they had cameras recording the scene over the weekend. There were also some rather handsome planters, illustrated above.
Into the Barbican where we found that programmes had risen to a fiver. But apart from a nasty smell of printing ink, quite good value, including a short essay about Jacobean masques and their place in this particular play.
Taking their queue from the masque, lots of clever effects with stage machinery, lights and sounds. I found the opening scene with a rocking wreck clever but rather forced. A bit self-indulgent on the part of the creative team. We also found SJB to be quite unsuited to the part, which he played in the manner of a building site foreman from the sixties. Short and tubby, lots of hands in pockets. No stately or even aristocratic to be seen. Menials, monsters, fairies, music and dance rather better, clever even. But I felt that the play was rather lost in all the cleverness. Not helped by my nodding for the second half of the first half. One example of this coming from the second half of the second half, where Miranda's famous line about brave new worlds was messed up, managing to raise a titter from some of the younger members of the audience.
Plus I did not care for the silly white uniforms worn by the bad guys. Much better to stick with vaguely Jacobean.
Ran for around three hours including interval. Full house, at least downstairs, in this big theatre. Plenty of people of working age and a fair sprinkling of children, whom, I suppose it was thought, would like the fancy staging. No luvvies or celebrities to be seen although there were some near misses.
Out to scuttle back to Moorgate in a light drizzle, to exit once again at Balham to take refreshment at the public house presently called the Regent, formerly the Balham Tup and before that a notorious den of iniquity, well known for the sale of flesh, powders and other substances, legal and illegal. Respectable on this occasion, running to a respectable glass of white wine from one of the colonies.
Despite my note about this at reference 5, we managed to get the slow train from Balham to Sutton, the one that goes via Croydon, but there was compensation in the form of three middle aged ladies, one very smartly dressed, on the way home from what we took to be a well lubricated beano. Loud discussion about house improvements, house prices and other beanos they had known. Probably fans of one or other of the many house flavoured reality TV programmes. All great fun.
Onto the Brasserie Vacherin at Sutton, a new to us French flavoured restaurant in Sutton, convenient on this day of transport shambles. Bread and flavoured butter good. Charcuterie plate good. A substantial lobster between the two of us, with chips. Not as fresh as it might have been, but adequate. Chips served small in the presently fashionable little metal buckets. Almost as good as the chips you get from McDonald's, on which subject see reference 6. With my own memory on the subject of McDonald's chips and dripping, stirred up yesterday on another outing, being faulty, but not off the wall.
We had chosen a Chablis to have with our lobster, and waved it onto the table without really paying much attention, partly because that I find the first sip of a white wine very misleading, a very poor guide to how the rest of it is going to taste. But on this occasion I was not impressed and got to reading the label, to find that we had been foisted off with what turned out to be a £10 bottle of Chablis from the nearby Morrisons, not what it said on the menu at all. Which meant that not only had our trust been abused, but that we were paying rather more than the around three times the price mark up which is usual and reasonable in restaurants (qualified by the thought that the factor should come down as the price does up). I think the staff - at least two of whom, one a young man from Cornwall and another a young lady from Poland, seemed very inexperienced (if pleasant enough) - were rather embarrassed to have been caught out in this way, as well they might have been. I took tarte tatin for dessert, and asked for Calvados, which was also on the menu. Perhaps once bitten, twice shy, because they did not try to pass something else off for the Calvados which they did not in fact have. No legging it down to Morrisons while I waited. I settled for a drop of Sauternes. But the tarte was at the heavy goo end of the tart spectrum, not the way I like it.
However, all moaning aside, we had a good meal, we enjoyed ourselves and we might well be back. A pity that we do not have such a place in Epsom, which one might have thought would have been a better bet than Sutton, known to be a touch rough at night.
PS: the following morning: the lapse noted at reference 5 has been nagging me for half a day. But suddenly I thought to ask for Carshalton Beeches and there we are. A post which I am fairly sure I did look at, just before the event. Which all goes to show that the older memory plus complicated search algorithms makes for a tricky situation. See reference 7.

Agatha
Yesterday was a day for an interesting word from Maigret, today is a day for an interesting word from Agatha.
The Agatha in question being the Marple yarn about running a borstal in the garden of a stately home, picked up with another at the secondhand bookshop which is more or less opposite the Catholic Church in Ryde High Street. A store with an extensive stock, although rather cluttered with piles of books all over the place. But I can always find something to pay my way there, hence the couple of Agathas at £2 a pop, both translated into French for 'le Club des Masques' by one Jean-Marc Mendel. With the title of mine, in English 'They Do it with Mirrors', rendered into French as 'Jeux de glaces'. Fair enough.
The word in question is 'billevesée', which seems to mean a bit of nonsense, as in 'that was just a bit of nonsense'. It caught my attention as I wondered whether this was another case of the French being much freer with body parts and body functions in their slang and idiom that we are. In this case with 'bille' being quite close to bile and 'vesée' being quite close to bladder. However, Collins tells me that gall bladder is something quite different, so wrong about that.
'Bille' seems to be ball, pure and simple, while 'vesée' does not seem to be anything, although the nearest real word is indeed 'vessie' for bladder.
Internet, once again, fails to help, so I still don't know where the word comes from.
On the other hand, bing turned up a blog of this name at reference 1, from which I have clipped the illustration above. It seems that the Anne of Green Gables, serious reading for generations of Canadian children, and others, has been made over. Has it been updated to the extent of dragging in child abuse? Maybe we will investigate, given the interest a few years ago. See reference 2.
A chap who appears to have been blogging for about the same time as I have, although I think I do more posts. And dipping at random, I turn up reference 3, of present interest given the production of the 'Tempest' at the Barbican. Of which more in due course. As they so often say, it's a small world.

Internet failure
Simenon uses lots of slang in his stories, slang which I assume was current in the middle third of the last century, and a lot of which is rather good.
However, in 'Maigret à l'École' we have 'interrogatoire à la chansonnette'. Not the first time I have come across the phrase, but the first time I bothered to check.
My various print dictionaries do not help, beyond telling me that chansonnette was the diminutive of song, usually meaning a sort of light-hearted song.
The various online dictionaries I tried did not help at all.
Until google or bing - I forget which - directed me to reference 1, a wonderful trove of old words, sayings and pictures, a lot of them from the period in question, a time when there was plenty of rather dodgy paperback fiction about, some of it even surviving until my own youth in the late 1960's. And at least the phrase in question was present, although not as a head word.
I learn about 'La maison poulaga', a slang term for Maigret's HQ on the Quai des Orfèvres, derived from the poultry market which used to occupy the site, getting on for a hundred and fifty years ago now.
And then the sort of interrogation that I am looking for is contrasted with 'l’interrogatoire au bottin', with bottin seemingly being the many volumes of the Paris telephone directory, an object with many interesting uses and an important prop in police flics of the time.
I don't get to find out was this is or was, but I eventually decide that the chansonnette variety is when the detective has the suspect into his office for beer and sandwiches (the baguette sort they sell in Paris, not the machine bread sort that we sell) for a long, friendly chat, preferably at lunch-time or at night when all is quiet. With this sharing of bread - with this becoming companions - being a important ingredient in getting the atmosphere right for a confession. Then Maigret takes his time, smokes lots of pipes, looks out of the window at the Seine below. The chat goes round and round, the suspect eventually gets into a muddle with all his lies and sort of drifts into a confession. No rough stuff - although Maigret does occasionally bash people who annoy him. And his colleagues quite often seem to go in for the quaintly named 'passages à tabac', which appears to mean roughing up and has nothing to do with tobacco.
Maybe there is someone out there who can put me right.
PS: we reviewed the Belgrade/Gambon version of 'Maigret à l'École' yesterday evening. Good enough in its way and Gambon does a good job on Maigret, but it seemed curiously thin compared with the story that I had just read. Liked it much better first time around.

Introduction
Following the post on binding at reference 1, we now look in more detail at occlusion, on the way that we propose dealing with it and on some of the issues arising from having vision data on more than one layer. And some matters arising.
Bearing in mind that the detail is going to vary from person to person and from time to time. For example, one person may have more interest in the hidden parts of objects than another person. And any one person’s interest is going to vary with time and place. Then some people will have a better developed sense of the three dimensions of a real world object than others. There may be a sex bias here. There may also be an eyesight bias. That is to say, LWS is built on vision and the LWS of people with poor eyesight may be the poorer for it.
In what follows we have at least sometimes used the terms ‘scene’ and ‘part’ in their ordinary senses, rather than in the special senses which we have defined elsewhere and summarised in Figure 31 below. We hope that this does not confuse.
Once again, this paper has been written with little knowledge of how engineering and technical drawing packages do such things, although we have drawn from examples from them. Not to mention all the work being done on robot and other kinds of machine vision. More knowledge may well have put a different slant on what follows.
An aside on colour and texture
We are not here concerned with the detail of the texture of the parts of layer objects, this texture being what carries the details of sights, sounds, smells and so on.
But we note that, at this stage, there are various possibilities for colour. It is possible that colour will be coded by clusters of cells. It is also possible the colour is in some sense basic, with the value of a cell coding for colour in some direct way, so one for red, two for green and so on, maybe half a dozen or more altogether, but remembering here that high and low value are already spoken for. Colour would then be expressed as an additive mixture of coloured dots, in much the same way that it is in a roadside advertisement – and it being for further consideration whether vacancy, low value, was experienced as black or white – or maybe, even, a nondescript grey. Something less positive than black or white. In any event, given the large number of cells, considerable resolution would be possible.
While more complicated coding schemes would be deployed for the other senses.
In the figures that follow we use colour, but not to show colour in the ordinary sense of the word, rather just to distinguish one part or object from another, to help with the diagrams.
To conclude, we also note that we have no idea what one of our layers would look like through a microscope. But while it is possible that one would see recognisable stuff, it seems unlikely that one would see much colour.
Regular objects
At reference 1 we looked at how a visual representation of a world consisting of more or less convex solids, solids with shape and substance like children’s building bricks, could be built in a layer of our LWS. A world to which we added a background and a foreground.
One of these bricks was represented as a layer object, usually broken down into parts, with the parts often corresponding to the planes or faces making up the surface of the brick. In the case of a cubic brick, one usually represented just two or three out of the total of six faces in this way. Note that it was not necessary to break multi-coloured faces into several parts as the appearance, the texture could vary across the one part. By extension, one dealt with other, more or less convex, solids in the same way.
Now while the layer included information about the order of objects, front to back from the point of view of the host of the LWS, who or whatever it was that was having the subjective experience, it did not include information about how far away ordered objects were, one from another. It did not distinguish the scenario where the front brick touched the one behind from the one where the front brick was miles in front of the one behind. Or that where a brick stood on the foreground from that where a brick was flying through the background.
To deal with this, we have proposed using composite objects on a second layer and column objects, with the combination admitting fuller description of the relations between layer objects.
Complex objects
But by no means all objects, for the purposes of LWS, for the purposes of consciousness, can be considered to be more or less convex solids triangulated, described by a collection of opaque, non-reflective surfaces. Children, for example, start to learn about objects like boxes which have and inside and an outside from quite an early age, say a year or so. They probably start to learn about transparent objects like windows and glasses before that. One of my own early memories is about being fascinated by objects which one could look through, objects like the sleeve of a box of matches.
Perverse objects
There are objects which are more complicated still, which are not going to fit our LWS world terribly well. Think, for example of something like a Möbius strip or the scenes concocted by Escher, scenes which have a logic of sorts but which are apt to confuse.
Our argument here is that the brain’s machinery did not evolve to deal with objects of this sort, rare in our ancestral jungles and savannahs, and it should come as no surprise that the brain should be confused or tricked by them.
Intensity and coherence
The visual signal from a layer has two important properties. The first is intensity and the second is coherence, with the second but not the first of these also being a property of an individual layer object.
Intensity is the power with which a layer is being activated, with zero intensity meaning that the layer has been, in effect, turned off, although the information is still there. While coherence is about the geometry of the layer. The two properties are more or less independent of each other. Note that a layer with zero intensity is just not there, while a layer with zero coherence is white noise, more or less loud according to intensity.
Intensity is illustrated in the two figures below using the Powerpoint transparency feature. In the first we have 100% left and 50% right. In the second we have 66% left and 33% right, giving us four levels of intensity of the same underlying scene.
Whereas, in the figure that now follows, the left hand scene is coherent, with strong straight borders and with a clear repeating texture, while the right hand scene is relatively incoherent. The boundaries have been thinned, the texture has been thinned and its pattern, its repetition weakened. It is still recognisably the same scene, but only just. The left hand scene will come across stronger than the right hand scene.
Moving from right to left in Figure 3 above might be thought of as moving from looking at a live cell through a microscope to turning that image into a comprehensible diagram on paper – a business requiring considerable skill and experience.
If we present two lots of visual information to consciousness, we will usually make one significantly weaker than the other, either in terms of intensity or in terms of coherence, so giving us, as it were, a primary and a secondary image, which is fine. While two signals of more or less equal strength are likely to confuse.
Adding up vision layers
Work so far suggests that it is going to be helpful for the LWS to hold information about what things look like on more than one layer. So how does the information from several layers get combined into a unified experience? Part of the answer is that the information is not combined, is not added up. Nor, even, does it amount to a unified experience, except in so far as the experience, such as it is, is all happening at the same time. Rather, the information from the various layers co-exists. And to the extent that the information from one layer does not fit with that from another, the experience will be incoherent – and at the limit may be little better than noise.
We may not need any one layer to be restricted to one modality, although restricting a composite object to one modality seems a likely minimum requirement. However, what we address here is combining information about what things look like from more than one layer.
Now our LWS works a bit like radio, with each of its layers being assigned a frequency band. The signal from any one layer is that part of the overall neural activity in the frequency band in question, with the signal at any one frame being the variation of amplitude of that activity across the array of cells of the layer, noting that within a frame, an interval or the order of a second or so, the variation is in space, not in time. Such signals clearly can be added up; adding up the components from the various frequencies is a natural thing to do. It is what the physics, what the brain does.
Which means that the compiler has to sort all this out, to decide what exactly it is that is to be added, before it presents the LWS package to consciousness.
The key issue seems to be that visual objects do not combine, do not add up in the way that, say, audio objects add up. We can add audio signals together and while they can, in theory, cancel each other out, in practise they often co-exist. Furthermore, the combined signal can often be broken back down into its components. The same is probably true of smells and tastes. While visual signals do not combine in this happy way and, generally speaking, a front object will block out a signal about a back object; the front object occludes the back object. With the upside being that at least we are clear about the front object. On the other hand, while the signal in question will most often or mostly be derived from signal arriving at the retina, in real time from real objects, which in this case would not include signal from the occluded back object, it may also include brain derived signal, which opens up the possibility of getting signal about such an object, even in the case where the front object is not transparent.
We now move onto some examples.
Scenario 1- out of the welter and waste and darkness
Being the words used by Robert Alter in his translation of Genesis, first used here at reference 4. In the figures that follow we illustrate in simple terms how this might happen in our world of LWS, either in the long time of evolution or the short time of growth. Or perhaps both; in the well-worn phrase from biology, perhaps ontology recapitulates phylogeny. Or in the even shorter time of waking up in the morning.
In the beginning, there is very little. Just one layer, just a background with a bit variation of colour. No structure or organisation. More or less incoherent.
Then we separate the heavens above from the earth below by colour alone.
Then we introduce our first bit of structure. A more positive, low value boundary between the background and foreground.
Then more structure. But we stop short of creating layer objects. This structure is shown here as thin blue lines, one cell wide, but in reality these lines would vary in thickness, or as we say gauge. Some would be single celled, almost vanishingly thin in the subjective experience, some would be much fatter, much clearer. Note than these edges do not themselves have texture or colour.
Then we start to get parts and objects. So, three more parts of foreground, bottom right. And a three part layer object in the middle, straddling the boundary between background and foreground.
And, finally, we move onto a new visual layer. We separate out our object onto its own layer, most of which is null, that is to say, low values, neither exhibiting nor generating any signal at all. While our object is now very coherent.
And it may well be that we leave the old image in place on the old layer. The new image which has been tidied up a bit, in the way of a diagram, can sit, more or less directly, on top of the old image, and having both active at the same time is not usually going to cause visual confusion. Alternatively, the compiler might replace the old image with low values, probably tidying up surrounding objects a little, while it is at it.
We call this process elaboration. We can also put this process into reverse, backing back into the welter and waste and darkness, this being the dilution introduced in the next section.
Scenario 2 – object A moving behind object B on the same layer
Here we have a simple scene of two, one part layer objects, with the blue one partially occluded by the ochre one. We have some sense of the missing, occluded blue corner, shown right on its own layer, without going so far as the rather effective transparency feature of Powerpoint illustrated below.
The transparency of the ochre rectangle being here set to 20%. Instead, we suggest that there are at least two arrangements which might be deployed, at the choice – whim even – of the compiler.
Option one, intensity. The compiler might deploy intensity as a volume control on layers, a number which we have called intensity, but which might also have been called activation or visibility. The activation processes associated with a high intensity layer are stronger and result in a higher intensity subjective experience. Furthermore, things might be so arranged that when a given quantum of activation flows from one layer to another through a column object, it will have more effect in when it arrives at a high intensity layer than when it arrives at a low intensity layer. So, while we might talk of flow, we might have something more complicated in mind than a hydraulic theory of activation. There might be something else going on.
Option two, coherence. An alternative, or perhaps complementary, wheeze would be to thin out the material on what we are calling low intensity layers. Boundaries which are ordinarily thick (wide gauge) could be made thin (narrow gauge), textures could be thinned out by increasing the density of low value cells and the structure of parts could be thinned out. We call this process dilution. One might store the start and end points of dilution on separate layers, wanting to have both versions of the story to hand.
Note again that hitherto we have shown most boundaries as being one cell thick, convenient when we are illustrating what goes on in arrays which are a thousand or more rows by a thousand or more columns in arrays which are perhaps fifty by fifty. In the real world of the LWS, boundaries will be of varying thicknesses.
One way or another, the overall effect is that the small blue, occluded rectangle on the right of Figure 10 above is experienced rather weakly, somewhere in the background of the scene on the left.
In the figure above we move from the red fringed plan views of one or two layers, to black fringed sectional views, through all the layers, a convention first introduced at reference 1.
At the top we have a simple linkage of the visible part of the blue object connected by a column object to the whole of the object on some other layer. While at the bottom we have interposed a descriptive object, a composite object with purple payload, linking the visible to the invisible part, appropriate to a rather stronger sense of the presence and nature of the invisible part. Note that the measurements of the link objects (in this case on layer 358) do not need to equate to those standing for the real world objects.
In terms of intensity, at the top we have high intensity row 335 and low intensity row 339, while at the bottom we have high intensity row 354 and low intensity row 362. Row 358 is not visual and comes into consciousness in a different way because apart from being a transmission belt for activation, its content is more verbal than pictorial.
Here, the upper section shows what happens as the blue object slides further under the ochre object, the lower when it has slid completely underneath. In this last case it would be inappropriate to link the two objects directly, they are unrelated except in so far as they appear to be in roughly the same place. The indirect link is more appropriate, with the change of purple to brown of the qualifier part, of the payload of the composite object standing for the change of relation from part-to-whole to on-top-to-underneath.
Scenario 3 – object A moving behind object B on different layers
We suppose that much of the time it suffices to carry most of the visual component of the scene in front of us on a single layer. But sometimes it will be convenient to separate out some objects onto their own layers. Perhaps, for some reason or another, one has just separated out the object of attention in this way. Or perhaps it is convenient to hold onto a layer object which represents the whole of the partially occluded object, not just the bit that can be seen. A layer object which supports prediction of what happens when there is movement of one or other of the objects.
So, on the left we have a brown object on its layer, partially occluding the blue object on the right, on another layer. We might have a convention that higher layers are on top, echoing having a series of transparencies, one of top of the other, with what it is on top sometimes obscuring what is underneath.
A simple way to deal with this would be to say that the left-hand layer was high intensity and the right-hand one was low intensity. But this would not usually reflect what was going on in the real world, where little signal was arriving from the top left-hand corner of the blue object. The imaginative brain cannot usually match the intensity of a real signal.
So here we have largely blanked out the occluded corner on the lower layer, just leaving a fairly weak sensation of the perimeter to make it to consciousness. A device which allows us to just add the signals from the two layers together, without necessarily needing to use the intensity feature. Note that, according to the rules, the yellow corner counts as part of the boundary of the host layer object, rather than part of the interior of the part.
While here we have allowed varying amounts of the texture of the occluded corner through, where the brain has succeeded in a stronger hallucination, other than top left which is as before.
In 2 and 3 the yellow bars remain part of the boundary, being connected to the dark blue. In 4 most of the yellow squares are isolated cells of the interior. While in 4 we have all the yellow in the interior, having been separated from the boundary by a strip of pale blue. Similarly, 6, 7 and 8.
It may well be, of course, that UCS can manage much the same thing without this pedantic attention to the rules.
We can qualify the relationship between the two objects, for example, the distance between the two objects, in much the same way as in scenario 1.
Scenario 4 – transparent objects
Here we move onto objects which are transparent. In the case that one object was simply and entirely behind a transparent object, with no parts peeping out at the sides, we might not chose to raise the first object at all, settling for rendering it as part of the second, transparent object. Or where there is peeping we might split the object behind into two separate layer objects, one behind and one peeping. Arrangements which might work in simply visual terms, but which do not help comprehension very much. We suggest that having two complete objects, one in front of the other is going to be more useful, at least some of the time. So how do we express the fact that the object in front is transparent?
So here we have our two objects again, on separate layers but overlapping in space, with the transparent brown object in front of the blue object. And both objects will be fully part of the visual experience, in their entirety, perhaps qualified to the extent that we had turned down the intensity of both layers: the first because a transparent object is a bit feeble, the second because even a feeble object is going to interfere with our seeing the object behind. Which might work well enough in the case that the back object is completely behind the front object, and working in terms of whole objects is well enough. But which is not the case here.
So another line might be that transparent objects do not reflect much light, do not send much signal of their own to the retinas, although when coloured they will filter for that colour. So, going beyond an adjustment of intensity, the corresponding layer object is going to be a bit feeble and, in the left-hand half of the snap above, we propose dilution of the texture with yellow low valued cells, which we suppose to generate no signal. Dilution which would allow signal from the blue part to show more clearly through the bars – or whatever other pattern one came up with – which one supposes to be roughly the way that Powerpoint does transparency – and the hypothesised subjective result of which we show right.
Note first that the brown cells are all connected up and so still constitute a region in the sense of reference 5 and the yellow bars are just so many holes; no visual image or experience arising therefrom. And that, given that the number of rows and columns involved is usually quite large, we can vary the dilution with some degree of precision between just over 0% and exactly 100%.
And second, that we have damaged the experience of the structure of the top left-hand corner of the blue object. This may not matter to the extent that this will not affect the activation processes which work on layers, at which level the structures will be fully visible. The experience is damaged a bit – but then it would be. Not many objects are perfectly transparent.
We have now added a couple of column objects and a composite object to link our two objects together, perhaps with the purple payload giving some sense of how far the blue object is behind the ochre object. Remembering that the left hand part of the figure above is a composite view of two layers.
Remembering also that in the LWS proper, there would be a lot more rows and columns and, relatively speaking, there would be a lot less clutter. The housekeeping stuff like boundaries and column objects would take up a lot less of the space available.
Scenario 5 – a complex object (a wooden table)
Here we look at more complex objects, objects of which we can only see some small part at any one time, with some of its bits always occluded by other bits, where we cannot see behind and we cannot see underneath, never mind inside. We also look at the support which may be given to vision by pictures and diagrams on paper and on screens, pictures and diagrams which can leap over all the petty constraints of the real world.
In this scenario we use a table, which we imagine as a cheap, white wood table, something like the figure above, lifted from bing. But this has been made easy – it might even be a diagram rather than a real table. It has certainly been abstracted from the real world.
Here we have a more realistic scene, involving a similar if somewhat more expensive table. It is quite possible that if we were thinking of something else, just idly gazing out into the garden, that the background would not have been resolved into layer objects at all, never mind layers. Just a bunch of parts supporting the image.
We might start with something like the figure which follows, echoing Figure 7 above.
A layer with just background and foreground, coloured green and pink for clarity here but which in real life would have varying texture, rendering the varying colours of the scene. A bit of blue high value to give some structure to the activation processes which will bring the scene to life.
Then, maybe we start to add a bit more structure, some layer objects, as shown in the figure which follows. In the frame that follows, picking up the jargon of Figure 31 below.
Just two objects so far, with an orange object behind and partially occluded by the multi-coloured object to its right. With the objects separated and ordered by the band of yellow low value and with both having just the one part. And if one took a bit of interest, UCS and the compiler would soon turn the simple story above into something a lot more complicated.
If we were carpenters, we might imagine, in some other layer (or layers). By lifting the top, we get to see pretty much all there is to see, this not being a very complicated table. But a lot easier if we can just look at a picture.
Or if we were a furniture designer, we might go as far as something like the figure above. But can a furniture designer really call to mind, call to his mind’s eye something like the above, when he sees a table of this sort?
He can certainly produce a diagram of this sort with the help of paper & pencil or a computer, but that is not the same thing at all.
Furthermore, neither Figure 24 nor Figure 25 are real world images of tables, and it is quite hard to combine the two, to produce a comprehensible diagram which sticks within the bounds of the seen image. Figure 26 which follows suggests a decomposition into parts of a layer object representing the table of Figure 20, a decomposition with top, rails and legs and which adds value to the raw image, puts at least some structure and regularity on it. Relates it to other similar bits of furniture which one has come across in the past. But in terms of information content, it is well short of Figure 25.
We only see two of the four edges of the table top. We only see one of the four sides of each of the rails. We only have two of the four rails. We only see two of the four sides of each of the legs. We only have three of the four legs. But I think that it is only this last which the compiler might do something about, adding a fourth leg on some other layer, in the way of the right-hand half of Figure 10. That would be enough for most people, that majority who are neither carpenters nor furniture designers, who are not interested in the backs of legs or the undersides of table tops.
A housewife might think of spiders hiding under the table top, but they can be dealt with in the same way as the forth leg.
So, in sum, we get more that Figure 20 but a lot less than Figure 25. A start, which we can probe further should our interest be aroused. Subsequent frames of the scene might bring out the results of such probing.
Wire diagrams – the wrong path
We wondered about the sort of image that one gets by just showing the edges of the polygons into which a real world object has been broken down into, maybe triangulated into. Polygons which map all the surfaces, perhaps inside as well as outside. An advantage of such an image would be that all the hidden parts of the object, the parts which are occluded from any particular point of view, would now be visible.
This works reasonably well in the case of a simple object like a cube, an object which looked OK anyway and does not really needs this sort of treatment. The dotted line convention makes back clear from front; there is no doubt that we are looking at a cube. Although visibility of faces and edges has been paid for by ambiguity about whether we are looking at a fish tank, a cardboard box or a child’s wooden building brick.
And we do need to remember that there is no such thing as a line in UCS or LWS. In the latter, the best we can do is rows of cells with varying gauges. Not so neat microscopically, although not so bad macroscopically. And better horizontally or vertically than otherwise – from where I associate to a memory of reading that the retina does best on vertical lines. Providing, I suppose, that one is not reared in a world consisting of horizontal lines.
Would it be helpful to consciousness as our objects get more complicated? We think not. As a support provided on paper or on screen yes, but as something that UCS generates for LWS on its own account, no. At least not for most people.
Wire diagrams of this sort can rapidly become unhelpfully complicated, at least to the lay person, even with a relatively simple object like the table. And even more so with the cars above, although the second is perhaps better than the first. There just get to be far too many lines to be able to make much sense of them, outside of the context of something like Autocad or, in this case, CADSoftTools of reference 6. We think it unlikely that, for most people at least, the compiler does any such thing. This is not a big part of the support for the everyday, conscious experience of cubes, tables or cars.
Other points
Tastes and smells can be mixed in a way that vision cannot, although it seems likely that some tastes will blot out other tastes and some smells might blot out other smells.
The same sort of thing is true of sounds, although with speech there is plenty of redundancy and it is quite often possible to separate out the speech line that is of interest. One can pick out the signal in which one is interested among quite a lot of clutter. Otherwise known as the cocktail party effect, whereby you know that someone is talking about you, someone whom you can see, some yards away, but whom you cannot really hear. See reference 2.
Music lovers sometimes claim that they can hear, on a more or less continuous basis, all four lines of a string quartet, somehow hear both the parts and the whole. This presumably works because here again there is plenty of redundancy. But I suspect things would get much harder if one had four first violins playing the first violin line from four different quartets: that might just be noise, a sort of loud version of the buzz of talk you mostly hear at the cocktail party.
And there is the compromise of writing music down. Expressing what is heard as frequencies and amplitudes in time as something which is seen as notes on lines in space. We read of musicians who can hear the music when they read such a score, perhaps to the extent of hardly seeing the notes on the page at all.
Another sort of compromise is Powerpoint with its transparency or films with their alpha channels, mentioned at reference 3. Human vision can manage transparency with things which are transparent and can fake it a bit otherwise, but cannot really impose it on things which are not, in the way that Powerpoint can.
Computers more generally can do something in the way of three dimensional vision, perhaps no more than three dimensional wire diagrams, but even then it is sometimes quite difficult to keep that something visually comprehensible, as is shown in Figure 28 above.
Sometimes, when one is tired, one has double vision, which usually manifests itself in the foreground object being attended to being doubled up, say with one copy of, for example, a figure on the television, being next to another. One is unware of any such doubling up in the background, possibly because one is not attending to it. From the present point of view, a fault in that part of the system which combines the images from the two eyes together. No difficulty about projecting two copies of the same image to the LWS.
Correction
We have moved on a little from the soft box model of reference 3. The current view is more like that which follows, made simpler with the loss of soft centred patterns and elements and made more complicated by the addition of UCS objects, column objects, composite objects and extended objects. At any one frame, the subject of attention is the layer object which we are attending to. Any one UCS object will be represented by zero, one or more layer objects.
Conclusions
We have looked at occlusion, the business of, from some particular point of view, one object being more or less in front of another object. A corollary of our working in our two and a bit dimensional world, of our down-sizing the real world. We have also looked at what we might mean by adding up layers to give a unitary experience. We have sketched what LWS might do.
The story seems to be that while most of what we experience as vision will be held on a single layer, there is room for some of the data, including here both vision, words and other supporting material, to be held on other layers.
New features are the reciprocal processes of elaboration and dilution. We start with a fairly blank sheet and put structure and content onto it. We create layer objects – with parts, textures and boundaries - and column objects. In other words, we paint a picture – not the same thing as a photograph at all. We call this process elaboration and it is what we do when we start to pay attention to something. Then there is the reverse process of dilution when we back out and our painting gradually sinks back into the void.
LWS remains a workable, a viable proposition, but we have strayed into areas where there is too much choice. Too much choice about how to address particular, practical problems. We need more work and probably some experimental data in order to narrow down that choice, experimental data which is going to be hard to get. An analogy might be a product like MS Office. You have a huge toolkit and there are usually various ways in which one can address any particular problem – but it takes experience to know whether it matters which way to take, and if it does, which is the best way to take.
Abbreviations and new terms
LWS – the local workspace. The proposed vehicle for consciousness. Named for contrast with the GWS – the global workspace – of Baars and his colleagues. But which might just as well be called the layered workspace, given the importance of layers therein.
UCS – the unconscious, the brain at large. Where all the heavy lifting is done which makes LWS possible.
Coherence – the amount of signal, as opposed to noise, from a layer or a layer object. Coherent objects will have strong, clear boundaries and regular, repetitive textures. Coherence is about what is happening on the data layers, the low frequency layers of LWS.
Dilution – the business of progressively weakening a more or less highly structured layer object. Thinning down its boundary, thinning out the texture of its interior. Thinning out the structure. At the limit, merging the layer object back into the background. Moving from coherence to incoherence.
Elaboration – the business of taking raw image, more or less what one might get from a digital camera, and, progressively, putting structure on that image, making it conscious and comprehensible. Moving from incoherence to coherence.
Gauge – the breath of the high and low value lines of cells making up boundaries. In the illustrations here, mostly one or two, but in real life rather more.
Intensity – the degree of activation or visibility of a layer. An intense layer will be strongly felt or experienced. Intensity is about what is happening on the (activation) process layers, the high frequency layers of LWS.

Introduction
Following the post on binding at reference 1, we now look in more detail at occlusion, on the way that we propose dealing with it and on some of the issues arising from having vision data on more than one layer. And some matters arising.
Bearing in mind that the detail is going to vary from person to person and from time to time. For example, one person may have more interest in the hidden parts of objects than another person. And any one person’s interest is going to vary with time and place. Then some people will have a better developed sense of the three dimensions of a real world object than others. There may be a sex bias here. There may also be an eyesight bias. That is to say, LWS is built on vision and the LWS of people with poor eyesight may be the poorer for it.
In what follows we have at least sometimes used the terms ‘scene’ and ‘part’ in their ordinary senses, rather than in the special senses which we have defined elsewhere and summarised in Figure 31 below. We hope that this does not confuse.
Once again, this paper has been written with little knowledge of how engineering and technical drawing packages do such things, although we have drawn from examples from them. Not to mention all the work being done on robot and other kinds of machine vision. More knowledge may well have put a different slant on what follows.
An aside on colour and texture
We are not here concerned with the detail of the texture of the parts of layer objects, this texture being what carries the details of sights, sounds, smells and so on.
But we note that, at this stage, there are various possibilities for colour. It is possible that colour will be coded by clusters of cells. It is also possible the colour is in some sense basic, with the value of a cell coding for colour in some direct way, so one for red, two for green and so on, maybe half a dozen or more altogether, but remembering here that high and low value are already spoken for. Colour would then be expressed as an additive mixture of coloured dots, in much the same way that it is in a roadside advertisement – and it being for further consideration whether vacancy, low value, was experienced as black or white – or maybe, even, a nondescript grey. Something less positive than black or white. In any event, given the large number of cells, considerable resolution would be possible.
While more complicated coding schemes would be deployed for the other senses.
In the figures that follow we use colour, but not to show colour in the ordinary sense of the word, rather just to distinguish one part or object from another, to help with the diagrams.
- Blue for high value cells
- Yellow for low value cells
- Green for background parts
- Pink for foreground parts
- Red for the surrounds for layers
- Black for the surrounds for vertical sections.
To conclude, we also note that we have no idea what one of our layers would look like through a microscope. But while it is possible that one would see recognisable stuff, it seems unlikely that one would see much colour.
Regular objects
At reference 1 we looked at how a visual representation of a world consisting of more or less convex solids, solids with shape and substance like children’s building bricks, could be built in a layer of our LWS. A world to which we added a background and a foreground.
One of these bricks was represented as a layer object, usually broken down into parts, with the parts often corresponding to the planes or faces making up the surface of the brick. In the case of a cubic brick, one usually represented just two or three out of the total of six faces in this way. Note that it was not necessary to break multi-coloured faces into several parts as the appearance, the texture could vary across the one part. By extension, one dealt with other, more or less convex, solids in the same way.
Now while the layer included information about the order of objects, front to back from the point of view of the host of the LWS, who or whatever it was that was having the subjective experience, it did not include information about how far away ordered objects were, one from another. It did not distinguish the scenario where the front brick touched the one behind from the one where the front brick was miles in front of the one behind. Or that where a brick stood on the foreground from that where a brick was flying through the background.
To deal with this, we have proposed using composite objects on a second layer and column objects, with the combination admitting fuller description of the relations between layer objects.
Complex objects
But by no means all objects, for the purposes of LWS, for the purposes of consciousness, can be considered to be more or less convex solids triangulated, described by a collection of opaque, non-reflective surfaces. Children, for example, start to learn about objects like boxes which have and inside and an outside from quite an early age, say a year or so. They probably start to learn about transparent objects like windows and glasses before that. One of my own early memories is about being fascinated by objects which one could look through, objects like the sleeve of a box of matches.
Perverse objects
There are objects which are more complicated still, which are not going to fit our LWS world terribly well. Think, for example of something like a Möbius strip or the scenes concocted by Escher, scenes which have a logic of sorts but which are apt to confuse.
Our argument here is that the brain’s machinery did not evolve to deal with objects of this sort, rare in our ancestral jungles and savannahs, and it should come as no surprise that the brain should be confused or tricked by them.
Intensity and coherence
The visual signal from a layer has two important properties. The first is intensity and the second is coherence, with the second but not the first of these also being a property of an individual layer object.
Intensity is the power with which a layer is being activated, with zero intensity meaning that the layer has been, in effect, turned off, although the information is still there. While coherence is about the geometry of the layer. The two properties are more or less independent of each other. Note that a layer with zero intensity is just not there, while a layer with zero coherence is white noise, more or less loud according to intensity.
Intensity is illustrated in the two figures below using the Powerpoint transparency feature. In the first we have 100% left and 50% right. In the second we have 66% left and 33% right, giving us four levels of intensity of the same underlying scene.

If we present two lots of visual information to consciousness, we will usually make one significantly weaker than the other, either in terms of intensity or in terms of coherence, so giving us, as it were, a primary and a secondary image, which is fine. While two signals of more or less equal strength are likely to confuse.
Adding up vision layers
Work so far suggests that it is going to be helpful for the LWS to hold information about what things look like on more than one layer. So how does the information from several layers get combined into a unified experience? Part of the answer is that the information is not combined, is not added up. Nor, even, does it amount to a unified experience, except in so far as the experience, such as it is, is all happening at the same time. Rather, the information from the various layers co-exists. And to the extent that the information from one layer does not fit with that from another, the experience will be incoherent – and at the limit may be little better than noise.
We may not need any one layer to be restricted to one modality, although restricting a composite object to one modality seems a likely minimum requirement. However, what we address here is combining information about what things look like from more than one layer.
Now our LWS works a bit like radio, with each of its layers being assigned a frequency band. The signal from any one layer is that part of the overall neural activity in the frequency band in question, with the signal at any one frame being the variation of amplitude of that activity across the array of cells of the layer, noting that within a frame, an interval or the order of a second or so, the variation is in space, not in time. Such signals clearly can be added up; adding up the components from the various frequencies is a natural thing to do. It is what the physics, what the brain does.
Which means that the compiler has to sort all this out, to decide what exactly it is that is to be added, before it presents the LWS package to consciousness.
The key issue seems to be that visual objects do not combine, do not add up in the way that, say, audio objects add up. We can add audio signals together and while they can, in theory, cancel each other out, in practise they often co-exist. Furthermore, the combined signal can often be broken back down into its components. The same is probably true of smells and tastes. While visual signals do not combine in this happy way and, generally speaking, a front object will block out a signal about a back object; the front object occludes the back object. With the upside being that at least we are clear about the front object. On the other hand, while the signal in question will most often or mostly be derived from signal arriving at the retina, in real time from real objects, which in this case would not include signal from the occluded back object, it may also include brain derived signal, which opens up the possibility of getting signal about such an object, even in the case where the front object is not transparent.
We now move onto some examples.
Scenario 1- out of the welter and waste and darkness
Being the words used by Robert Alter in his translation of Genesis, first used here at reference 4. In the figures that follow we illustrate in simple terms how this might happen in our world of LWS, either in the long time of evolution or the short time of growth. Or perhaps both; in the well-worn phrase from biology, perhaps ontology recapitulates phylogeny. Or in the even shorter time of waking up in the morning.

And it may well be that we leave the old image in place on the old layer. The new image which has been tidied up a bit, in the way of a diagram, can sit, more or less directly, on top of the old image, and having both active at the same time is not usually going to cause visual confusion. Alternatively, the compiler might replace the old image with low values, probably tidying up surrounding objects a little, while it is at it.
We call this process elaboration. We can also put this process into reverse, backing back into the welter and waste and darkness, this being the dilution introduced in the next section.
Scenario 2 – object A moving behind object B on the same layer

Option one, intensity. The compiler might deploy intensity as a volume control on layers, a number which we have called intensity, but which might also have been called activation or visibility. The activation processes associated with a high intensity layer are stronger and result in a higher intensity subjective experience. Furthermore, things might be so arranged that when a given quantum of activation flows from one layer to another through a column object, it will have more effect in when it arrives at a high intensity layer than when it arrives at a low intensity layer. So, while we might talk of flow, we might have something more complicated in mind than a hydraulic theory of activation. There might be something else going on.
Option two, coherence. An alternative, or perhaps complementary, wheeze would be to thin out the material on what we are calling low intensity layers. Boundaries which are ordinarily thick (wide gauge) could be made thin (narrow gauge), textures could be thinned out by increasing the density of low value cells and the structure of parts could be thinned out. We call this process dilution. One might store the start and end points of dilution on separate layers, wanting to have both versions of the story to hand.
Note again that hitherto we have shown most boundaries as being one cell thick, convenient when we are illustrating what goes on in arrays which are a thousand or more rows by a thousand or more columns in arrays which are perhaps fifty by fifty. In the real world of the LWS, boundaries will be of varying thicknesses.
One way or another, the overall effect is that the small blue, occluded rectangle on the right of Figure 10 above is experienced rather weakly, somewhere in the background of the scene on the left.

At the top we have a simple linkage of the visible part of the blue object connected by a column object to the whole of the object on some other layer. While at the bottom we have interposed a descriptive object, a composite object with purple payload, linking the visible to the invisible part, appropriate to a rather stronger sense of the presence and nature of the invisible part. Note that the measurements of the link objects (in this case on layer 358) do not need to equate to those standing for the real world objects.
In terms of intensity, at the top we have high intensity row 335 and low intensity row 339, while at the bottom we have high intensity row 354 and low intensity row 362. Row 358 is not visual and comes into consciousness in a different way because apart from being a transmission belt for activation, its content is more verbal than pictorial.

Scenario 3 – object A moving behind object B on different layers
We suppose that much of the time it suffices to carry most of the visual component of the scene in front of us on a single layer. But sometimes it will be convenient to separate out some objects onto their own layers. Perhaps, for some reason or another, one has just separated out the object of attention in this way. Or perhaps it is convenient to hold onto a layer object which represents the whole of the partially occluded object, not just the bit that can be seen. A layer object which supports prediction of what happens when there is movement of one or other of the objects.

A simple way to deal with this would be to say that the left-hand layer was high intensity and the right-hand one was low intensity. But this would not usually reflect what was going on in the real world, where little signal was arriving from the top left-hand corner of the blue object. The imaginative brain cannot usually match the intensity of a real signal.

In 2 and 3 the yellow bars remain part of the boundary, being connected to the dark blue. In 4 most of the yellow squares are isolated cells of the interior. While in 4 we have all the yellow in the interior, having been separated from the boundary by a strip of pale blue. Similarly, 6, 7 and 8.
It may well be, of course, that UCS can manage much the same thing without this pedantic attention to the rules.
We can qualify the relationship between the two objects, for example, the distance between the two objects, in much the same way as in scenario 1.
Scenario 4 – transparent objects
Here we move onto objects which are transparent. In the case that one object was simply and entirely behind a transparent object, with no parts peeping out at the sides, we might not chose to raise the first object at all, settling for rendering it as part of the second, transparent object. Or where there is peeping we might split the object behind into two separate layer objects, one behind and one peeping. Arrangements which might work in simply visual terms, but which do not help comprehension very much. We suggest that having two complete objects, one in front of the other is going to be more useful, at least some of the time. So how do we express the fact that the object in front is transparent?

Note first that the brown cells are all connected up and so still constitute a region in the sense of reference 5 and the yellow bars are just so many holes; no visual image or experience arising therefrom. And that, given that the number of rows and columns involved is usually quite large, we can vary the dilution with some degree of precision between just over 0% and exactly 100%.
And second, that we have damaged the experience of the structure of the top left-hand corner of the blue object. This may not matter to the extent that this will not affect the activation processes which work on layers, at which level the structures will be fully visible. The experience is damaged a bit – but then it would be. Not many objects are perfectly transparent.

Remembering also that in the LWS proper, there would be a lot more rows and columns and, relatively speaking, there would be a lot less clutter. The housekeeping stuff like boundaries and column objects would take up a lot less of the space available.
Scenario 5 – a complex object (a wooden table)
Here we look at more complex objects, objects of which we can only see some small part at any one time, with some of its bits always occluded by other bits, where we cannot see behind and we cannot see underneath, never mind inside. We also look at the support which may be given to vision by pictures and diagrams on paper and on screens, pictures and diagrams which can leap over all the petty constraints of the real world.

He can certainly produce a diagram of this sort with the help of paper & pencil or a computer, but that is not the same thing at all.
Furthermore, neither Figure 24 nor Figure 25 are real world images of tables, and it is quite hard to combine the two, to produce a comprehensible diagram which sticks within the bounds of the seen image. Figure 26 which follows suggests a decomposition into parts of a layer object representing the table of Figure 20, a decomposition with top, rails and legs and which adds value to the raw image, puts at least some structure and regularity on it. Relates it to other similar bits of furniture which one has come across in the past. But in terms of information content, it is well short of Figure 25.

A housewife might think of spiders hiding under the table top, but they can be dealt with in the same way as the forth leg.
So, in sum, we get more that Figure 20 but a lot less than Figure 25. A start, which we can probe further should our interest be aroused. Subsequent frames of the scene might bring out the results of such probing.
Wire diagrams – the wrong path
We wondered about the sort of image that one gets by just showing the edges of the polygons into which a real world object has been broken down into, maybe triangulated into. Polygons which map all the surfaces, perhaps inside as well as outside. An advantage of such an image would be that all the hidden parts of the object, the parts which are occluded from any particular point of view, would now be visible.
This works reasonably well in the case of a simple object like a cube, an object which looked OK anyway and does not really needs this sort of treatment. The dotted line convention makes back clear from front; there is no doubt that we are looking at a cube. Although visibility of faces and edges has been paid for by ambiguity about whether we are looking at a fish tank, a cardboard box or a child’s wooden building brick.
And we do need to remember that there is no such thing as a line in UCS or LWS. In the latter, the best we can do is rows of cells with varying gauges. Not so neat microscopically, although not so bad macroscopically. And better horizontally or vertically than otherwise – from where I associate to a memory of reading that the retina does best on vertical lines. Providing, I suppose, that one is not reared in a world consisting of horizontal lines.

Other points
Tastes and smells can be mixed in a way that vision cannot, although it seems likely that some tastes will blot out other tastes and some smells might blot out other smells.
The same sort of thing is true of sounds, although with speech there is plenty of redundancy and it is quite often possible to separate out the speech line that is of interest. One can pick out the signal in which one is interested among quite a lot of clutter. Otherwise known as the cocktail party effect, whereby you know that someone is talking about you, someone whom you can see, some yards away, but whom you cannot really hear. See reference 2.
Music lovers sometimes claim that they can hear, on a more or less continuous basis, all four lines of a string quartet, somehow hear both the parts and the whole. This presumably works because here again there is plenty of redundancy. But I suspect things would get much harder if one had four first violins playing the first violin line from four different quartets: that might just be noise, a sort of loud version of the buzz of talk you mostly hear at the cocktail party.

Another sort of compromise is Powerpoint with its transparency or films with their alpha channels, mentioned at reference 3. Human vision can manage transparency with things which are transparent and can fake it a bit otherwise, but cannot really impose it on things which are not, in the way that Powerpoint can.
Computers more generally can do something in the way of three dimensional vision, perhaps no more than three dimensional wire diagrams, but even then it is sometimes quite difficult to keep that something visually comprehensible, as is shown in Figure 28 above.
Sometimes, when one is tired, one has double vision, which usually manifests itself in the foreground object being attended to being doubled up, say with one copy of, for example, a figure on the television, being next to another. One is unware of any such doubling up in the background, possibly because one is not attending to it. From the present point of view, a fault in that part of the system which combines the images from the two eyes together. No difficulty about projecting two copies of the same image to the LWS.
Correction
We have moved on a little from the soft box model of reference 3. The current view is more like that which follows, made simpler with the loss of soft centred patterns and elements and made more complicated by the addition of UCS objects, column objects, composite objects and extended objects. At any one frame, the subject of attention is the layer object which we are attending to. Any one UCS object will be represented by zero, one or more layer objects.

We have looked at occlusion, the business of, from some particular point of view, one object being more or less in front of another object. A corollary of our working in our two and a bit dimensional world, of our down-sizing the real world. We have also looked at what we might mean by adding up layers to give a unitary experience. We have sketched what LWS might do.
The story seems to be that while most of what we experience as vision will be held on a single layer, there is room for some of the data, including here both vision, words and other supporting material, to be held on other layers.
New features are the reciprocal processes of elaboration and dilution. We start with a fairly blank sheet and put structure and content onto it. We create layer objects – with parts, textures and boundaries - and column objects. In other words, we paint a picture – not the same thing as a photograph at all. We call this process elaboration and it is what we do when we start to pay attention to something. Then there is the reverse process of dilution when we back out and our painting gradually sinks back into the void.
LWS remains a workable, a viable proposition, but we have strayed into areas where there is too much choice. Too much choice about how to address particular, practical problems. We need more work and probably some experimental data in order to narrow down that choice, experimental data which is going to be hard to get. An analogy might be a product like MS Office. You have a huge toolkit and there are usually various ways in which one can address any particular problem – but it takes experience to know whether it matters which way to take, and if it does, which is the best way to take.
Abbreviations and new terms
LWS – the local workspace. The proposed vehicle for consciousness. Named for contrast with the GWS – the global workspace – of Baars and his colleagues. But which might just as well be called the layered workspace, given the importance of layers therein.
UCS – the unconscious, the brain at large. Where all the heavy lifting is done which makes LWS possible.
Coherence – the amount of signal, as opposed to noise, from a layer or a layer object. Coherent objects will have strong, clear boundaries and regular, repetitive textures. Coherence is about what is happening on the data layers, the low frequency layers of LWS.
Dilution – the business of progressively weakening a more or less highly structured layer object. Thinning down its boundary, thinning out the texture of its interior. Thinning out the structure. At the limit, merging the layer object back into the background. Moving from coherence to incoherence.
Elaboration – the business of taking raw image, more or less what one might get from a digital camera, and, progressively, putting structure on that image, making it conscious and comprehensible. Moving from incoherence to coherence.
Gauge – the breath of the high and low value lines of cells making up boundaries. In the illustrations here, mostly one or two, but in real life rather more.
Intensity – the degree of activation or visibility of a layer. An intense layer will be strongly felt or experienced. Intensity is about what is happening on the (activation) process layers, the high frequency layers of LWS.

Stop press
A little while ago, the church of St. Bartholomew-the-Great in West Smithfield, first noticed here at reference 1 and one of the few old churches left in London, hosted the funeral of a gangster called Bruce Reynolds, organised by his entirely respectable sounding son.
While yesterday, the rather grand Italian church in Clerkenwell, first noticed here at reference 2, hosted the funeral of a man described as the last of the big gangsters of the 1950s. People who were into cut throat razors and cudgels rather than guns.
It seems that funerals of criminals are almost as exciting as the funerals of royalty and film stars. I can only suppose that the priests in charge of such places console themselves with the thought that we are all (barring suicides and such like riff-raff) entitled to a proper send off, as they trouser the unusually large donation to the church funds. I wonder if it has always been so.

Murder most foul
I noticed the Palsgraf case at reference 1, in part because I had read about it a few days previous.
But to start at the beginning, a TLS which I had happened to pick up in Waitrose (reflecting its high class status) had about a third of a page given over to a £20 book by one Alexandria Marzano-Lesnevich called 'The Fact of a Body'.
A book about the murder of a child in Louisiana which looked interesting, but a bit dear at £20. Interested enough to make enquiries of amazon, where I found that I could get a kindle copy for 99p. Not sure why this was; perhaps it was dished out more or less as a freebie to deserving customers - and while I have not done the sums I do buy quite a lot of books and DVDs from them - perhaps to the tune of a few hundred pounds a year. In any event, downloaded on the spot and now read.
The author comes from a rather dysfunctional immigrant family in New Jersey, a place called Tenafly just across the Hudson from Yonkers and New York. With dysfunctional appearing to include a father who drank too much and a grandfather who abused her over a period of some years. Abuse which was eventually discovered and stopped but otherwise brushed over. Life went on as before. At some point she went to law school and at another spent time as an intern with a law firm specialising in death penalty cases in Louisiana. Now more a writer than a lawyer.
While in Louisiana, she came across and made a study of the murder which is the subject of this book. The perpetrator came from a family which was both poor and dysfunctional - not a good combination in the US - and the circumstances of his birth were bizarre. The perpetrator was always odd, did not mix easily and knew that he had inappropriate feelings for children from quite an early age. Various offences in this connection and at least one prison term. Some time after which he murders a six year old boy - which, being in the US, is old enough to own a BB gun, just about lethal, although not relevant to the case. He goes through several trials, sits on death row for a few years and is now in prison for life with no parole. More bizarre in that his victim's mother visits, or at least did for a while. Although BH did not find this bit so bizarre: she thought that a mother might well do such a thing, would want to know.
The book is part story of the author's life, part story of a crime. Both, lightly fictionalised.
But also a story about how we come to apportion blame and to award punishment. A story according to which we have some facts about which there is not all that much disagreement. We then build a story around those facts, a story on the basis of which we apportion blame and award punishment. The catch being that the story that we build depends as much upon context as on the facts. Who is telling the story, why and to whom the story is being told. The whole context, to borrow a word from the last post, the terroir of the story. With the result that we can easily have wildly different stories about the same crime.
For what it is worth, my own view is that although any abuse in this case was premeditated, this not excluding it also being a spur of the moment, opportunistic thing, the murder was not premeditated. It just sort of happened. My view also, as it happens, of the Soham murders in this country, the subject of much lurid coverage for a while.
I am not sure that I am much the wiser after reading this grubby tale. I guess I stick with the line that while a perpetrator may not be to blame - nature, nurture or circumstances may have been too strong - that is not to say that we don't take him or her out of circulation. And there does have to be punishment even if we cannot manage correction - this last despite the correctional name of US prison services. And I remain an opponent of the death penalty, certainly in so far as normal, civilian, peacetime life is concerned.

Some time after which he murders a six year old boy - which, being in the US, is old enough to own a BB gun, just about lethal, although not relevant to the case. He goes through several trials, sits on death row for a few years and is now in prison for life with no parole. More bizarre in that his victim's mother visits, or at least did for a while. Although BH did not find this bit so bizarre: she thought that a mother might well do such a thing, would want to know.
The book is part story of the author's life, part story of a crime. Both, lightly fictionalised.
But also a story about how we come to apportion blame and to award punishment. A story according to which we have some facts about which there is not all that much disagreement. We then build a story around those facts, a story on the basis of which we apportion blame and award punishment. The catch being that the story that we build depends as much upon context as on the facts. Who is telling the story, why and to whom the story is being told. The whole context, to borrow a word from the last post, the terroir of the story. With the result that we can easily have wildly different stories about the same crime.
For what it is worth, my own view is that although any abuse in this case was premeditated, this not excluding it also being a spur of the moment, opportunistic thing, the murder was not premeditated. It just sort of happened. My view also, as it happens, of the Soham murders in this country, the subject of much lurid coverage for a while.
I am not sure that I am much the wiser after reading this grubby tale. I guess I stick with the line that while a perpetrator may not be to blame - nature, nurture or circumstances may have been too strong - that is not to say that we don't take him or her out of circulation. And there does have to be punishment even if we cannot manage correction - this last despite the correctional name of US prison services. And I remain an opponent of the death penalty, certainly in so far as normal, civilian, peacetime life is concerned.
