Needing a little fresh air the morning after Grand Central, we strolled back down to the river and picked up the Queen Adelaide Way, a road running north a little to the east of Ely and coming with a serious embankment on the western side, topped with a footpath. A footpath from which one had fine views over the fens to the east and over the Ouse to the right. See gmaps 52.393190, 0.276945.
After about a mile the road joined up with the Ouse again and we were treated to a very grand boathouse under construction, an outpost of the Cambridge University rowing operation. There were also some young people getting ready to row. We learned later that the Ouse is deemed a better place to train for the annual boat race in London than the rather smaller Cam. The Ouse is a real river.
A bit further on and we were able to cross back over the Ouse to the Ely side by means of a rather dilapidated footbridge and loop back to Ely Town. Lots of bird noises but no bird tweets worth mentioning. Lots of dog walkers. Some enthusiastic small children.
PS: some signs talk of Ely City, presumably on the strength of the cathedral. But city seems a bit strong for what is mainly a middle sized market town.
