Fossil flint

We were pleased to turn up a rare example of a fossil flint, that is to say a flint which had formed by trickle down of the necessary salts into the cavity left by the scapula of a wild boar, sus scrofa to Asterix fans, no doubt cooked on one of the two hearths found at the site.

The boss of the scapular spine is just about visible to the right, just below the scale rod.

Rope recent; see reference 1.

The flint was removed from the site, probably illegally, and is now decorating our back patio. I don't suppose they would have been too bothered about the rod.
