In my more than ten years as a Whitehall Walker, I think I visited the Civil Service Club once, which I dimly remember as being rather like a works canteen, a memory which had been reinforced only a few days ago by someone from Tooting who had visited the place in the margins of a marathon or something. So a bit surprised, when making our way back to Waterloo from the Whitehall Theatre, to find that it was quite a grand building outside - with plenty of provision for puffers, whatever the cast might not have done on the stage of the theatre.
