This is the weekend of the Derby race meeting up on the downs, with ample warning having been given by the arrival of travellers on Court Recreation Ground.
In the olden days, I might have celebrated both the Oaks and the Derby in proper style, booze, fags and all. Indeed, at one time when I was not officially smoking, I used to allow myself two packets of Gitaines on Derby Day, at that time obtainable from a tobacconist near the Spread Eagle crossroads.
Yesterday, I got as far as noticing racing activity in the Marquis of Granby at around 1100 and various strays all the way to Ewell West railway station. Plus extra police standing around town centre.
Followed up by a visit to the Cricketers yesterday evening to sample their New Zealand white. Busy outside, but quiet enough inside. With a young barmaid too tired to respond to old person's attempt at banter.
On the way out we were able to check up on the duckling situation at the pond and I am pleased to be able to report that there were still thirteen of them, the same number as had been reported two days previously. Note the Canada goose standing behind the post on baby minding duties. Apparently she (or he) can get quite aggressive if she thinks you are getting too close or taking too much interest.
PS: bit of a mystery to me why the council don't offer Hook Road Arena to the travellers for the duration of this meeting: a big open space where they should not need to bother anyone. And I dare say laying on water there would not be a big deal. There might even be a stand pipe somewhere handy.
