Tulip tree

A flower on a tree on West Hill, first noticed just about two years ago at reference 1, and noticed at various times since then. Liriodendron tulipifera, aka the tulip tree (among a number of common names), a member of the magnolia family. Quite a lot of dead wood in the tree, hopefully weather stress rather than something more sinister.

A passing lady asked me what it was, and I said a large tree from Kentucky, the lipiodendrum. Bing could cope with the misspelling, so perhaps she found her way to the right place on the Internet.

While BH, when I reported the matter, said tulip tree and magnolia, both of which I denied. Quite wrongly as it turned out. But at least I was right about Kentucky, where it is the state tree. And it is large.
