Stray

A portrait of Sir Ralph Assheton and his wife by Sir Peter Lely.

She was his second wife and it seems that she had once strayed and been fetched back. By way of memento he has this portrait painted with him hanging onto a lock of her hair and with his foot on the bottom of her dress, just to make sure that she did not stray again. All very odd. Whatever did she make of having it above her principal fireplace?

Sadly, a proper reproduction does not seem to be available online, so readers will have to make do with the snap left, taken from the book of the house. Parham House, that is.

I dare say I could have done a better job if I had flattened the book a bit more and taken more trouble with the lighting. But breakfast called.
