Black poplar

On the path between the gardens and the town, we came across a heritage sign in front of the bush illustrated left. The sign was dilating about the presence of a very rare black poplar.

There didn't seem to be anything else to hand, but the bush, despite the pretty blue flowers, did not seem to be very poplar like, not even one which had been cut back to the ground and was now sprouting. Checking this morning, I find that the black poplar is native, rare and can grow to be a substantial timber tree, of 30m or more. And certainly not the bush with the pretty blue flowers.

Something else to check out next year.
