Yaverland four

Scored to Yaverland, but Thursday past started out as the day for our first visit of the year to Firestone Copse, noticed last year at reference 1.

First stop the memorial chapel, on the little hill opposite the farm dairy, just south of the copse. A fine day, so fine views. Not 360 degree, but not bad at all. The snap left includes the trig point this year, from which we learned that we were 62m above the mean high water mark at Dublin Harbour, it sticking in my mind that that is how we measure such things.

Second stop the copse, where after a bit of wandering about, we found the stand of big pine trees. It will be a sad day if they ever feel the need to cash them in at the local chipboard factory. Popped out of the edge of the copse at one point to catch a fine view over the hills to the south. Another quite a good showing of carex pendula. Some confusion between buzzards and large crows, but we are reasonably sure that we visually tweeted at least one of each. Some evidence of timber being extracted, perhaps classified as thinning. Some evidence of old hedge lines scattered about, now more or less buried in the trees.

Weather continued fine, so after our picnic, we nipped back down to the beach at Yaverland to clock up another swim. Did not do rock cakes on this occasion as we had the heavy fruit cake from Ventnor to finish. See reference 2.
