Temperance movement

The temperance movement was clearly in good form in Ventnor in 1883, with this snap being the base of a substantial drinking water fountain (disused) on the esplanade. But then, Ventnor was the posh end of the east coast of the island. Maybe they kept out of the way at the Ryde end, designated R&R for all the sailors living and working across the water. Left that to the Salvation Army, who did not mind hard work.

The catch being that Ryde is still adjusting to the down-sizing of the Portsmouth operation, while Ventnor seemed to be doing OK. Even the odd vegetarian restaurant.
