Fruit & veg

The haul from the fruit and veg. shop in the upper High Street in Ryde.

Cherries dear but good, and done in not much more than an hour when we got back to Brading. Not Isle of Wight. Note the odd tint given by the camera, exaggerating what one saw with the eye. Note also the convenient disposal area for the stones, although the dish would have been even more fit for purpose had it included somewhere to put the spoons needed to transfer stones from mouth to disposal area. Spoons which, I suppose, have gone the way of butter knives.

Cherries seemed a little thin by the end, as if they had been plumped up a bit beyond their optimum size by untimely rain.

Maybe the second broad beans of the season. Taken boiled with brown bread for tea. While we wondered what Egyptians did with their broad beans, something of a staple there, but being very hot, the beans would be ripe and hard, not good eating, just lightly boiled in the English way. Perhaps they grind them into a paste and do something with that.

Satsumas, bright and shiny, lived up to their appearance.

I ought also mention two small cucumbers bought from an honesty box outside someone's front door on the High Street, here in Brading. Best small cucumbers we have had for a while, probably less than 48 hours picked, which is not going to be matched by many shops.

PS: irritated this morning to read that the former ***** (libelous adjective redacted, but interested readers can try to reconstruct it from the number of letters), Chris Evans, is thought to be worth more than £2m a year by the BBC. Irritated that the BBC should try to compete with the private sector in such matters. If it was up to me, if he asked for that sort of money, the answer would be that he was welcome to try his luck elsewhere. I should say that I have absolutely no idea what he does for his money, if anything.
