Sick tree

A rather odd tree, just south of the mansion, in Nonsuch Park.

So it got broken off about six feet from the ground at some point. But why did it develop this large growth, rather cancerous in appearance, rather than just pushing out some new shoots in the ordinary way?

Perhaps careful dissection would reveal the story - at the expense of what is left of the tree.
