Sand

As reported in the last post, a windy day at Yaverland.

One result was that there were all kinds of interesting patterns in the sand, not least the two-tone effect with gray and yellow sand.

Much pondering about what was happening around the pebbles, with lots of downwind yellow tails. It took me a while to work out what was going on, but eventually I decided (possibly quite wrongly) that the yellow sand was large particles and the gray sand was small particles. The large particles were dropping out of the wind as it slowed down over the pebbles, and building up downwind, in the their lee. With any sand dropping down on the pebbles themselves being promptly blown along to drop down into that same lee.

This just leaving the faint ripples in the gray to be explained away.
