DIY (episode one)

Just about six months ago we bought a new kitchen blind from Argos, a snip at £15 or so and noticed at reference 1. Now collapsed, mainly because of the blind not having been glued square onto the roller, but also because of the flimsy construction of the roller mechanism. We then decided that £45 from John Lewis click & collect was going to be a better bet.

Off to a bad start when I went to collect it from our local Waitrose, to be told that I could not have it without presenting photo id as I did not have not the name of the order. The fact that I was clutching the bank card of the person of the name of the order made no difference. The lady on customer services was dug in and was not going to budge. Definite whiff of her pleasure at getting one over a customer. See reference 2 for a similar occasion.

But a few days later, BH collects the thing without fuss. We unwrap it to find that it looks to be a lot better made that its Argos cousin.

But no question of hanging the blind just yet. First we have to plug the holes in the top of the window frame left by its two predecessors. Maximum palaver equals maximum brownie points. So we have the kitchen performance illustrated. Eight softwood plugs to fill the eight softwood holes in the window frame.

Glue them up and got them all in OK, only snapping two of the eight in the process. But the following morning I was a bit disappointed that despite cutting them close with a saw, I failed to make a good clean finish with the chisel, despite sharpening it. A fine box-wood handled chisel from Marples, the like of which you are unlikely to see a working carpenter with. I suppose the plugs were just too soft. Fortunately, a spot of Dulux Weathershield White Undercoat (probably not EC-legal for use indoors) and you would not know from ground level. Gloss tomorrow, with episode two scheduled for next week.
