A great spotted woodpecker appeared this morning at the top of the (possibly sick) oak tree in our back garden, just beyond the mini ponds. A rather rarer visitor to our garden than the green woodpecker, often to be seen pecking away at the back lawn.

Distinguished for me from the little spotted woodpecker by being about the size of a blackbird.

The RSPB is very firm about the many people who claim to have seen a middle spotted woodpecker. These are French and do not get across the Channel. La Manche to them.
