Bugle

Did pie at the Bugle last year (reference 1), so back there last week for some more.

We were in luck as turkey pie was on, although the Fleurie had vanished, and this Malbec caught my eye instead, its label being very different in style from those of the other half dozen or so on offer.

Both pie and wine well up to the standard set last year. With the gravy served in a little jug, rather than poured over everything, and with newish potatoes rather than chips. With some Jameson to finish up with. Only let down by the slanting, evening light from the west bringing out all the washing up machine smears in the glass ware.

Quite a good class of decorative book, pretty much up to the standard set by the Wetherspoon's in Tooting.

Quite busy for a Tuesday, with what must have been half a dozen other parties eating at the same time as us, plus a certain amount of pub trade from what looked like locals. The chap who served us thought that the place would be full the day following for the football - but he was off and away to the other island for the duration.

PS: as it happened, we passed another pub in the same group, the Caulk Heads at Sandown, on the bus today. With caulkheads being proper inbred, island people, with little or no taint from the aforementioned other island. Maybe we will get to visit next year.
