Cathedral

In May, Guildford Cathedral saw fit to host a gin event.

Happening to pull over there for a break on the way home today, we find that they are doing something slightly more classy, that is to say a graduation event for Surrey University. Place swarming with graduates, their friends and families.

Apart from hoods, gowns and mortar boards, the dress code was not that different from that of the gin event, with lots of bright and sparkly clothes on view. Not to mention legs, which BH did not approve of for an event of this sort. Some full on make-up, some bouquets and at least one national flag for a proud graduate from somewhere a long way away.

Car park rather full, so we took a chance and parked in the area reserved for the diocesan education centre, right next to the café. We did not think that they would be too fierce about clamping, and as it turned out there was no problem.

PS: I had forgotten about mortar boards. I think they stopped being compulsory for undergraduates at Cambridge while I was at school there. Gowns much more recently. See manuscript addition to page 12 of reference 3, illustrated below.

Reference 3: The Fresher's Don't - author and date unknown - maybe 100 years old. Lost, but recovered by the gmail search facility. The original came to me by falling out of a book by Admiral Bacon about the Dover Patrol which I was buying from the Oxfam shop in Tunbridge Wells. See reference 2 above.
