An antique fake, that is to say a very pleasant and tranquil lake contrived in the 18th century, some ten to twenty feet above the River Mole, adjacent right.
Possibly fed by means of a large waterwheel which lifts water therefrom.
While the bridge is a more complicated sort of fake, being a modern copy in stone, or at least in masonry, of an older bridge in wood, which had been so contrived as to look like white stone. Presumably the gentleman who first built the park had got through most of his inheritance by the time he got to the bridge and needed to economise on materials a bit.
A bridge which is not quite right, in that it seems rather too loud visually for its setting. It should have been a bit less solid, a bit more fragile and perhaps a bit smaller. At least, not quite right to this writer, from this angle, in this light.
A park to which I shall return in due course.
