From time to time I mention the stupidity of the Tory Lords, hereditary (and quite possibly badly inbred) at that time, over giving the Irish Home Rule, a hundred years or so ago.
This morning, I made a slightly different link to those times. At present, all the people getting steamed up for or against Brexit are focussing a lot of their steam on whether the so-called Irish long stop will have a defined end-point or whether it will be open-ended. Lots of steam getting focussed on a matter which is footling, not to say trivial. A matter which has become a rather silly symbol or flash point for the wider dispute.
I associate to the time of similarly heated and bad-tempered (to say the least of it) debates about Home Rule, debates which got focussed on the precise form of the words of the oath of allegiance which the Irish, having got Home Rule, would take to their sovereign. Hard to see now why anyone would have cared, or even to have pretended to care.
