The third volume of the Forsyte Chronicles did eventually turn up and has now been renewed once.
However, despite having had a reasonable go and got around a hundred pages in, I have decided to give up and put the Forsytes to rest. Life is too short to bottom them out. Otherwise put, I found it hard to get excited about what seemed to be rather contrived story lines, interwoven (in the fashion of a lot of English literature from between the two world wars) with too much preaching, too much educational material.
It is also true that the admirable family tree mentioned at the end of reference 2, does not extend to the subjects of this third volume. Perhaps reflecting the status of this last as a keep-the-pot-boiling follow on to its rather better - and very successful - predecessors. So I found it hard to keep proper track of all the members of the cast.
About to be returned to Epsom Library.
PS: and for the record, just starting Volume XXIV of the collected works, mainly of Maigret.
