Picture worth a thousand words

With this picture, or rather graphic, coming from an article about the retreat from meat in the 13th October edition of the Economist.

Which, like a lot of graphics of this sort, I found difficult to understand; this particular graphic was certainly not worth a thousand words. One got the general idea that beef was an expensive way of getting one's protein, but the detail was pretty impenetrable, at least to me, despite spending several minutes on it, even going so far as to read some of the article.

Subsequently, I went off to the Weizmann Institute at reference 1 (presumably named for the war time chemist who subsequently became the first President of Israel) and from there to reference 2. Which last does not seem to contain the offending diagram, but certainly does bear on the topic and certainly does contain similar diagrams. At some point, I shall give it a proper go, to see if it throws out any light into the present darkness.

Graphic icons on doors and directions are another big offender here. Maybe someone ought to work over some of the universities pumping out graphic artists, to explain to them that looking neat or pretty is not the only requirement. Accessibility and comprehension are good too. Maybe I should start at home, here at Epsom, at reference 3.

PS: I continue to wonder when the Epsom Common Association will get on-message about cows, and remove their cows from Epsom Common, where they have been a nuisance, as far as I am concerned, for some years now. But I have still not found the energy needed to get myself to one of their meetings.
