We have now had a serious go at the hazel nuts reported at reference 1, now dried out a bit and rather browner than they were.
Around half the nuts contain edible nuts, of varying sizes. Some vary small, but still edible. Larger ones rather better, better than the kiln dried version from Spain which one is apt to get at Christmas and which usually have a rather bitter taste about them.
Some of the other half were empty. Some contained nuts which felt very soft. And a small number contained fat white maggots with a brown spot at the head end, maybe a quarter of an inch long. I do not recall ever coming across livestock in nuts before - but which left me wondering how growers and shops deal with all this, as the shopper of today expects every nut to be spot on, and half would be nowhere near good enough.
