Aga

About thirty years ago, in Norwich, having abandoned the parental gas cooker in favour of what then the latest thing in cooking by electric light, we bought some smart Prestige saucepans, agreeably non-non-stick.

Some while later they were supplemented by a non-non-stick frying pan, a frying pan which has done very well over the years. But finally, its composite base started to decompose and a new one was indicated.

In the meantime, the saucepans had already decomposed and had been replaced by Aga saucepans, a purchase noticed at reference 1.

Looking around for non-non-stick frying pans initially revealed very little at all. But eventually we turned up some websites which offered frying pans without lids or things called sauté pans with lids - which we have come to like. And thinking about it, we probably used the frying pan as much for simmering and stewing as for frying. So we settled for a sauté pan with a lid from Aga. Claimed by their website to be a top favourite. And somewhat under half what we could have paid for such a thing - it being clear that our European partners are good for much bigger outlays on eating than we are.

It turned up today and, considering it was bought without actually seeing or handling, something I am not keen on for this sort of thing, it should do very well. Furthermore, they have improved the shaping of the handle in the middle of the lid, which now has a more comfortable grip. And I might say in passing that I find the volume markings engraved on the insides, both imperial and metric, just about visible if you click to enlarge, rather useful when making soup.

And I avoided a shopping expedition, which would probably have taken half a day out. Might have needed to take liquid refreshment to keep me going.

PS: the aluminium saucepans which we took to Norwich, and which had done well enough in their time, have since been outlawed. Something to do with ingestion of dissolved aluminium. For some years, one could pick them up from car boot sales really cheap. But no good to us as we had stuck with electric cookers, despite their rather unsatisfactory grills.
