Alien

Slightly taken aback this morning by a very alien looking bird sitting in the top of the ash tree at the bottom of our garden. Actually a ring necked parakeet (aka rose ringed parakeet), a distinctive green parrot, about the size of a small magpie, now naturalised in the rich south eastern parts of our kingdom. And despite looking alien, very common around here.

The leaves of the ash tree, being the last to come in the spring and the first to go in the autumn, are all gone, but the tree is full of brown clusters of seeds. The form this morning seems to be that the parrot picks a cluster with its beak, transfers it to one of its claws and then proceeds to eat the seeds. I had not realised that parrots were prehensile in this way. All very entertaining.
