Taxman

There is a piece in yesterday's 'Times', a Murdoch rag that I do not read very often, which tells us how awful it is that the Duke of Westminster manages to die without paying much in the way of death duties on his considerable estate. With common mortals being expected to stump up 40%.

But at the very end of the piece, it tells us that the complicated trust which looks after the Westminster affairs has done a deal with the taxman whereby they pay 6% every ten years, death or no death. Which seems fair enough. So why the headlines?

The fact that one might not like the fact that there are some very rich people in the world is quite another matter.
